The Race

The International Submarine Race (ISR) is a 20-year-old biannual engineering design competition at one of the world’s largest indoor tanks – the Naval Surface Warfare Center’s Carderock Division David Taylor Model Basin in Bethesda, Maryland.

The submarine race is a contest that began in 1989 and has grown to include partcipants from colleges, corporations, and private teams from North America and Europe. Teams consist of students and engineers who attempt to push the limits of human propulsion and fluid mechanics. Safety divers are on hand to prevent accidents and to assist teams on their runs. Florida Atlantic University set its first official speed record at the Human- Powered Submarine (HPS) races in June 1991. In 2005, FAU returned to the 8th International Submarine Races. The team was awarded second place for “Best Overall Performance”, won the “Smooth Operator” award for most consistent performance, and placed third in overall speed.

The HPS team at FAU has a history of making a strong appearance at the International Submarine Race since our debut over 15 years ago. Including our 2009 “Absolute Speed” Award for having the fastest sub at the race.

Now the time has come for FAU to build a new human powered submarine and we need your help. Our team is dedicated to constructing a new submarine with innovative propulsion technologies and the chance to propel ourselves back to the top.
